Definition
Operational intelligence (OI) refers to the capability to monitor, analyse, and respond to operational events and conditions in real time. It combines data from across an organisation's physical assets, systems, and processes to provide a current, actionable picture of operational performance and risk.
Unlike traditional business intelligence — which typically analyses historical data for strategic planning — operational intelligence focuses on present-state awareness and near-real-time decision support.
Core Components
Real-Time Data Integration
Operational intelligence systems ingest data from multiple sources simultaneously:
- IoT sensors and industrial equipment
- SCADA and PLC systems
- ERP and operational databases
- External data sources (weather, market conditions, supply chain)
Data is normalised, correlated, and contextualised to produce a unified operational view.
Monitoring and Alerting
Continuous monitoring of operational parameters against defined thresholds. Alerts are generated when conditions deviate from normal operating ranges, with escalation rules based on severity and asset criticality.
Analytics and Pattern Recognition
Machine learning models and statistical analysis identify patterns in operational data that are not visible through manual monitoring. This includes anomaly detection, trend analysis, and predictive modelling.
Decision Support
Operational intelligence systems present actionable recommendations to operations teams, prioritised by potential impact and urgency. This supports human decision-making rather than replacing it.
Applications in Industry
Manufacturing: Machine health monitoring, production throughput tracking, quality defect detection, OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) calculation.
Energy and utilities: Grid load monitoring, asset performance analytics, outage prediction, consumption pattern analysis.
Logistics and transportation: Fleet health monitoring, route performance analysis, dock and warehouse throughput visibility.
Construction and safety: Site safety monitoring, workforce compliance visibility, plant and equipment utilisation.
Relationship to Related Concepts
- Business intelligence (BI): BI focuses on historical analysis for strategic decisions. Operational intelligence focuses on real-time awareness for operational decisions.
- Industrial IoT (IIoT): IIoT provides the sensor and connectivity infrastructure that feeds operational intelligence systems.
- Digital twin: A digital twin is often a component of an operational intelligence system, providing a real-time model of a specific asset or process.
- SCADA: SCADA systems provide operational data and control for specific equipment or processes. Operational intelligence integrates across multiple SCADA systems and other data sources.
